THE PRAXIS EXAM......gulp

Today was a good day. Last summer, on July 26th, I took a big test following the completion of my graduate courses. The official test name was PRAXIS II: Speech-Language Pathology. It tests a variety of areas within the field. I have been waiting and waiting for the results. It is almost OCTOBER!!! So I decided to call my mom and see if she had received anything, because the results were to be sent to the home address. Well, funny story, they actually came a month ago. My mom asked if I wanted her to open up the test results. Hmmmmmm......That poses a dilemma. On one hand, Mom could open the results and I could find out immediately and be deliriously happy. On the other hand, this could be quite an embarassment. I mean, who wants others to know that you didn't pass a CRITICAL exam. Considering my mother already knows more about me than anyone else (you know, changed hundreds of my diapers, knows all my hopes and fears, etc.), I let her open the letter.

PASS WITH FLYING COLORS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

This means after another 7 months of working in the schools while completing my clinical fellowship year, I will be eligible to receive my C.C.C.'s. This stands for Certificate of Clinical Competence, which provides speech-language pathologists the license to work in hospital/health settings, and work in any state in the U.S.!

Graduate school has been a great learning experience, yet challenging as well. It was filled with some small celebrations along the way, waking up at 4:30 AM during the summers to study with my classmates while laying in bed, extremely long days in the same classroom, good friendships, good memories, being mad when we had too much to do, and even some tears. Just over three years ago I had no desire to go to grad school. Life can be pretty interesting how it gives you unexpected twists. I guess this is such a big deal because I've put so much into it. HAPPY DAY! Not every day is this exciting, but it is sure worth blogging about.

Summer Pictures with Peter

Summer pictures with my brother, Peter. Here we are in June/July taking pictures with the computer. In fact, my 2 months of bliss at home was spent with Peter a majority of the time. Ruth made the big bucks at IHOP. I miss home, the family, including all of the siblings terribly!!!! Oh, the ache.....
He does what little brothers do best, pull their sister's hair!
This is what happens when you don't eat your vegetables.

Below, Peter is a Jedi Knight. He is so cool. He knows the most about Star Wars of anyone I am aware of!
You better believe he would fight valiantly to defend the good.

Yearbook Yourself...THANKS KELSEY!

So Kelsey, my sister, introduced me to this website. www.yearbookyourself.com. You are able to paste your face into different hairdews from 1950 to about 2000.

Do we not all see our grandmothers in the above photo?
I think this one makes me look like my mother, even though she came a bit later than the above photo. I think the flip look came back for a while a few years ago. I even used a curling iron + hairspray to make the perfect curl similar to this. "I tie my shirt in a knot, I love stretch pants that connect under my feet with a loop, I love the 'slap wrist bands,' and let me not forget the HAIRSPRAY!!!"

I love to have as much volume as possible. I need GEL and a HUGE ROUNDBRUSH!!!

Go to the website and have fun. www.yearbookyourself.com.

An Interesting Day

This morning started like most days. The alarm went off, which consisted of ocean waves that get louder and louder. I laid there for 5 minutes and finally got up, hopped in the shower, then decided it was a "my hair is going to dry on the way to work day." All the kids at school were great as usual, and some of them made me laugh. Little "Johnny" made the r sound for the second session. Yeah! That is what I work for. It is for those moments, that I work so hard.

I ran around today getting papers signed, calls made, and adjusting schedules between therapy sessions. Sometimes I feel like a chicken without its head, with a productive, yet barely staying above water feeling that most of us feel at one point or another. However, most days are WONDERFUL and I love what I do.

The end of the day consisted of testing a cute second grade girl coming from a less fortunate and dysfunctional background. She tested well, and I think she might be ready to be released. We'll see though, because the testing isn't finished.

Then I grabbed the folders and papers I needed for a routine meeting I often am involved in about 70 times per year, maybe more! It involves the principal, regular classroom teacher, parent (s), sometimes the student, and all of the service providers...which in this case was just me. I always get a tad bit nervous for these meetings, knowing first impressions mean a lot, and also keeping the meeting short enough to keep the others happy, but also thoroughly cover the legal material needed and the discussion of the child's progress, goals, other concerns, etc. The meeting did go well, and my principal said, "I love the way your IEP meetings have been going, and I've seen a lot this year." WOW! That was a good feeling. Despite the awesome comment, by this time of the day, most of us are tired, and just want to go home.....

So I left the building with my bags, and what did I see? A young man by my car with........................................

TWO DOZEN PINK AND WHITE ROSES!!!!

Needless to say, this was a huge surprise, very flattering, and happy.!!!!!!! This was soooooooo thoughtful and kind to think of me, when so much goes on in our lives. SMART BOY. Flowers are a love of mine. Note of importance: this is NOT the actual picture of the TWO DOZEN PINK AND WHITE ROSES. Unfortunately the camera is missing:( This picture is from google images. But you get the idea. Although I am not ready to disclose the giver of the TWO DOZEN PINK AND WHITE ROSES (and yes I am still single--my commitment phobia will take a while to get over), I wanted to share the happy surprise!

Lake Powell Weekend

Sabrina, Alison, Kelly, Lisa
My friends are so generous to me. Here we are on the back of the boat. It was a bit cloudy for part of our water day, but it was cool enough to not be miserable in the heat. Below is Sabrina, the pro at wakeboarding. Nice form!
Two weeks ago some friends and I went down to Lake Powell. It was such a fun weekend! We stayed in a houseboat, and then took the boat out to have fun during the day. What an adventure! Above is Sabrina. She really knew how to wakeboard.
We hiked up to this point on all sand, which was quite the exercise.

This was my first time up. It was fun, but I couldn't move much because I didn't get the "rotate your hips" idea down. You all should try it.
Trying to stay up!
So many of us are used to regular water skiing, where your hips are parallel with your shoulders. It is the opposite with wakeboarding where your hips are supposed to be perpendicular to the shoulders. I guess then you are supposed to be able to move around behind the boat, over the wakes, and left to right. Its just really hard to think about that when you are trying to stay up!!

Above are two of the other girls that I went to Lake Powell with, Allison and Kelly.
